Description

Okay, lets get the art-speak out of the way first:

This is a practice piece. I wanted to work on three things, and Abraham just happened to be in my line of sight wearing this, so I couldn't put it off. It had to be done.

Subject one: The use of gradients. Both in shading and in color. Of course, I fumbled a bit with it in the background, but it works okay on him. I know I need more practice, but it's a start, right?

Subject two: Black on black or predominantly black characters. I've had a lot of requests for them lately and I just don't feel like I'm where I need to be with them. It's hard to practice within my own cast of characters ... because I don't have any. So I figured I'd have to go with clothing. I've learned that every brushstroke counts. I'm still not great at it. Practice, practice.

Subject three: It's high time I tackled the tuxedo. I've always meant to, but never took the time. It's harder than it looks if one isn't used to it ... which I am not. I spent a *ton* of time on it. There have been some changes. I'm aware that the cut is off in certain areas. But that's Abe's fault. Tight clothes tend to get caught in his external plates and I hear it's quite uncomfortable, so I gave him a little more room. I'm also aware that the color of the waistcoat and bow tie are not traditional colors. But this is him and those are the colors he'd prefer.

So, like I said, I still need to work on all of these things, but practice is the only way I get better. So there.

***** Character Info You Don't Have To Read *****

Abraham Planestrider has been a character of mine for at least 16 years. In all that time, he's worn the same clothing. Never changed it. Not even once. It's his uniform. I've come to count on it.

So imagine my surprise when he showed up in a tuxedo. And he wore it like a natural. He seemed perfectly comfortable, as though nothing was out of the ordinary at all.

Except for the shoes. He's worn padded and very comfortable boots since forever. He just couldn't seem to get used to them. They felt funny ... and then there was the shine. He kept worrying at them and staring at them.

The upside to the shoes is that Isaac, his 8-month old son, was completely fascinated by them. He thought they were the best. A better part of ten minutes was spent standing very still and watching the baby play with the shines and his own reflection.

Why the sudden change? Because his wife likes suits and it was her birthday. He went right back to the old outfit the next day.

There's nothing sexier than a guy in a suit or tux. The fact that he's staring at the shoes and rather bemused by them is just so charming. I love the flow of his hair and how it flows. The vest and tie being the same colour is just the right touch. Even your practice pieces are full of charm. His face is just too adorable.
