Ken Zuhan - Yatonese

Description

This picture is doing double duty ... because I'm lazy and don't care.
Birthday picture for Ken, and Alien of the Month: Yatonese. Technically, Ken is only a half-breed, which means he's inferior by yatonese standards. But he's the only (even partially) yatonese person anyone who is not full-blooded yatonese and native to their few planets are likely to ever see. Close enough for me!

About Ken:

Ken was cloned on Pazour from the genetic material of a crashed yatonese pilot and the ShaWai leader Shetou, making him half yatonese, half Mongolian. He was taken from the incubator and breathed his first breath on his own on March 3rd, 1,010 PIC (Pazourian International Calendar). Though he was technically Pazourian royalty, his father was supposed to exist only as a legend, so Ken was raised by a trusted crime lord (it's a long story).

When he was 16, Ken did his first run as a black market smuggler. His superior agility, reaction time, and athletic abilities made him the perfect runner, whether on foot or driving a vehicle. He developed a reputation for excellence. By 20, he was the premier runner in the Eastern territories. His working name was now synonymous with the black market and it's skilled runners. (In ShaWai, the black market runners were given code names and were as popular as professional sports players. Their careers were watched with interest.)

He continued his career, now a legend in his trade, until he failed to find challenge in it. The speed of the fastest vehicle became commonplace, even boring. He retired in 1,244 PIC and planned to live out the last of his slow, bored days in his house in the mountains looking over Jade Harbor. But his retirement was short. Shetou ordered him to the workshop of Baron Zuhan.

No one had seen Baron Zuhan in at least a hundred years. He had stashed himself away in this large estate, tinkering with whatever project captured the fancy of his mechanical and engineering genius. Ken was admitted to the compound through a hidden door in the side of a cliff-mounted wind-engine. Ken assumed he would find a little eccentric old man with big glasses and a lab coat. Instead he found a tall man who looked no older than 30, fit and well-kept, with long black hair, and eyes hidden behind fashionable dark glasses who introduced himself as Tom.

By order of Shetou, Tom was to build Ken a new vehicle. He didn't care what kind. He just wanted Ken back to work. After weeks of testing, trial and error, Tom decided to build a motorcycle. New fuels, propulsion systems, steering, guidance, paint composition, shocks, tire pattern and materials were invented in the process. Ken was encouraged to participate in the design. He may not have had Tom's genius, but he knew better than anyone what he wanted.

When the bike was done, Ken didn't leave the Zuhan grounds. He had spoken the words that went down in Pazourian romantic history: "If I don't leave soon, I'm going to start kissing you and I don't know if I'll be able to stop." To which Tom had replied, "Stay." Theirs is the longest uninterrupted and monogamous relationship in all of my stories.

The next time Ken went on a black run, he did it under the sign of Zuhan.

Since the fall of Pazour, in 12,220 PIC, Ken and Tom both became citizens of the ASS Empire. Ken was introduced to the pilot's seat of a mobile suit. He had only seen one before the Empire fleet, the one his mother had crashed so long ago. The Empire knew of the yatonese, and couldn't wait to get Ken in the pilot seat claiming it was his "ancestral war machine". They were right. He was a natural. The only problem was that the neural interface couldn't keep up with him. It was adjusted to it's limit, and still wasn't good enough. He would wear out a machine in two missions. He was the best they had ever seen, but he was also the most expensive.

Strings were pulled, and favors were called in. It took almost two years, but cargo from Deathsmith Hephestus was delivered just outside the galaxy. Inside the box was an elegant large-class mech the color of Ken's hair. It has a one-of-a-kind control system, propulsion, and interface, and is (by far) the finest mech in the galaxy, and probably the kingdoms. It took Ken four months to learn to pilot it with any proficiency. It is called the KCIFire. Today he is the mech pilot all others wish they could be.

Ken has made several attempts to contact the yatonese people. They have declined to return his messages except more recently to explain that he is a half breed, therefore inferior and a disgrace to their people, and they would like nothing to do with him.

He is known for his turn-of-phrase and extreme quotability, piloting skill, fantastic hair, unique yatonese features, and his love for Tom.

Ken is pictured here with his beloved dog Stupid (who more than earns his name). "He runs into walls and once wore down his teeth trying to chew Tom's stone Buddha. Then there's the gas. Just be glad I didn't name him Butt-Trumpet."

The Yatonese:

They have been briefly mentioned before. Unfortunately, there is more to cover than DA is equipped for at this point. They are living anime characters of all types. Like the "ASS Empire", that pokes fun at science-fiction, "space marine", and futuristic military media, the yatonese encompass anime/manga tropes, stereotypes, traditional design elements, and story arcs.

Wild hair, huge eyes, chibi forms, blowing flower petals, extreme jumping with hang time, and high-pressure bleeding ... as many as I can think of. The twist is that I have challenged myself to find a pseudo-science explanation for all of it. (Up to and including the magical healing powers of a cold compress ... which I have wondered about since my first visit to the elementary-school nurse ... that one took some doing.)

If any of you have any suggestions for me to include, which I may not know about, please let me know. But remember that these can't be things found in only one anime world or series. They have to be more universal traits almost to the point it would by called "typical of anime in general". They are still an open race in progress, so new ideas are welcome.

The one thing that is set in stone is their attitude to outsiders. They consider outsiders "inferior" and if they do incorporate something from outside their culture, it must be changed significantly and made to seem like a culturally original idea. This attitude came from the extreme attitude I get from some anime fans. Their steadfast belief that anime/manga is "superior" and that the only good version of something is the anime/manga version of it. I think that kind of attitude is funny because I believe each art form has it's pros and cons and none is inherently "better". It is simply a matter of taste.

I've been called "ignorant", "racist", and an "anime hater" for that thought (also homophobic ... ?). Hence the attitude of the anime/manga people in my universe. The comedy wrote itself in this case.

Is he a space alien or something?
