I made the mistake of watching the news and catching up on current events. And so ...
... I have been escaping in to art ... more appropriately into Kay's world. His personal morals and the ways of his Order, even though they are not real, have provided me with a refuge of sorts. The world outside my apartment may be screwed up, but at least I can find peace somewhere ... even if it doesn't strictly exist and is of my own making. They say we make our own hell, but I think I have made my own sanctuary. Hopefully things will calm down soon.
So here we have Kay' in a moment of peace and quiet, enjoying the company of a few Gravel Grouse. When things get a little too hectic or weird he takes a moment to himself, puts on clothes the Gravel Grouse can't hop into (They like to explore his big sleeves and pant legs. What fun!), and goes to the farms just to sit among them and think quiet thoughts.
He has had a very long time to soul-search, but he says he won't be done until his life is over and he comes face to face with whatever the powers that be and they personally tell him he has it right. He's not sure when that will be and so his meditations continue.
His first thousand years or so were spent trying to determine if he, who was designed and grown in a lab, even had one to begin with. He thought so, but some extremists said it wasn't possible and it had him confused for a long time. His answer came in the form of charity. If it was in his mind and heart to do well by others and help those who needed it most and to walk away from that job well done feeling better than before and with more happiness than he had to begin with, then surely that must be what it was to have a soul. That and having the choice between right and wrong and choosing, at all times, that which is right.
From that idea grew the Order of the Red Cross. They are a pan-theistic, though only semi-religious, organization focusing mostly on relief missions and charity. They are non-profit and the millions they take in each year is put back into their work, less spartan living expenses. Last year, after all donations, charities and efforts were balanced against their sum income, they only made $500 profit ... which is significant considering there are at least 300 times that many members.
They are a fighting force as well, capable of defending a small country against aggressive invaders. But they only use non-lethal weapons and aim to capture the people who have done wrong to turn them over to the appropriate authorities. Accidents do happen but they are thankfully rare. They ask for no pay or compensation from the people they defend and often come prepared to re-build cities and with ships full of food and other relief items.
